The West Indies team, led by Clive Lloyd, was the defending champion and considered the favorite to win the tournament. They had a formidable team with star players like Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, and Malcolm Marshall. On the other hand, the Indian team, led by Kapil Dev, was considered an underdog.

In the group stage, India performed well, finishing second in their group behind the West Indies. They won five out of their six matches, with their only loss coming against the West Indies. Kapil Dev's all-round performances, including his 175 not out against Zimbabwe, were crucial in helping India advance to the knockout stage.

In the semifinals, India faced the dominant team of the time, the West Indies. Batting first, India were bowled out for just 183 runs. However, their bowlers, led by Mohinder Amarnath, put up a superb performance, restricting the West Indies to 140 runs and securing a memorable upset victory.

The final of the 1983 Cricket World Cup was held at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on June 25, 1983. India faced the West Indies once again. Kapil Dev won the toss and elected to bat first. India struggled early in their innings, losing wickets quickly. However, Kapil Dev played a magnificent innings of 175 not out, guiding India to a total of 183 runs.

In their chase, the West Indies were in a commanding position at 57 for 2. But the Indian bowlers, especially Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal, turned the game around with some exceptional bowling. The West Indies were eventually bowled out for 140 runs, handing India a historic 43-run victory.

India's victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup was a significant moment in Indian cricket history. It brought cricket into the mainstream in India and inspired a generation of cricketers.
